Dr. Sudeshna Basu, grew up in Kolkata, India .  She started her early musical training under the tutelage of famous hindusthani classical vocalist Smt. Meera Bandyopadhyay of Patiala gharana. After a rigourous training in classical music Sudeshna started taking Rabindrasangeet lessons under the maestro Sri Ashoketaru Bandyopadhyay. Recently, she has started taking lessons on Dhurpad from the famous Gundecha Brothers.

Sudeshna, also a mathematician by training, obtained her Ph. D from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. She then went to United States to pursue her academic goals.  After teaching at universities in the US,  she quit her full time job to dedicate herself whole heartedly to music. She now divides her time between mathematics and music. She has performed extensively in USA, Canada and U.K. She has done collaborative projects with western musicians as well.

At a very early age, Sudeshna started performing extensively under Ashoketaru’s guidance and was a regular participant in the Sangeet Sikshar Asar in All India Radio. She had her first solo performance at Sisir Mancha, Kolkata. This was followed by an invitation from Rajya Sangeet Academy to sing for the young artist series. She was later invited by Sri Sudeb Guha Thakurata, principal of Dakshinee Music School, Kolkata, to sing for Gitabitan Live, a digital archive of Rabindra Sangeet compiled by Dakshinee.  Her first CD comprising of ten songs was launched in January, 2005 by Bhavna records and cassettes company. The legendary maestro V. Balsara arranged the music for her first album which happened to be his last work before he passed away in 2005.  As of date, Sudeshna has four albums to her credit. She is also an invited artist of the State Government of West Bengal.  Sudeshna has many students both in India and in the USA. She regularly conducts workshops in both the countries.
